We Play To Win by Garfield Sobers

I would like to say at the outset how heartened I have been by the wonderful reception given me by all connected with the Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.

Officials and supporters, alike, have done their best to make me feel at home and I do thank them for it.

From the start of my cricket career I always had the hope that I would be able to play County Championship cricket. The change of the laws made this possible and I will always be grateful to Nottinghamshire for entrusting to me the leadership of their side.

Last season was a great personal adventure and I am pleased that things turned out so well. Finishing fourth in the table gave the side great satisfaction and I thank all of the boys for the wonderful support they provided.

Indeed, had we held our catches even this high position might have been improved upon but I hope cricket lovers were happy with that we achieved.

Believe me the team will make every effort to bring the championship pennant to Trent Bridge and I think the talent is available to sustain a keen challenge.

Nottinghamshire cricket certainly had a period in the doldrums but the club has a forward looking spirit nowadays which must eventually bring success.

For my part I pledge that the team will at all times endeavour to provide challenging, entertaining cricket.

I have always believed that the best way to achieve this is to play to win. I get no satisfaction in a game which peters out into a placid unrewarding draw.

Nottinghamshire have players capable of appearing in the best company and I believe that there are great days ahead.

As you know I will not be available for the early part of this season which coincides with the West Indies short tour of this country.

You can be sure, however, that should any opportunity arise to play in Sunday League or Knock Out Cup games I will do so.

In my absence Brian Bolus will lead the eleven. I wish him the best of luck and it will be a great thrill if, on my return to county duty, I find the side in a challenging position.
