William Upton was christened in Cotgrave on 10 June 1804 and is thought to have lived in that village for most of his life - his death is recorded in the third quarter of 1863 in the 'Bingham area'.
Certainly, his club cricket was for Cotgrave, Bingham and Holme Lane, between 1822 and 1838, when he made 'useful' scores (details are scant), but the earliest record shows him appearing for E Warsop's XI v S Morley's XI on The Forest in October 1819.
He played twice for the Nottingham Old Club, both times against Sheffield at Darnall; in 1827 he made 9no and 7 and the following year scored 1 and 0; he is not credited with any wickets or catches. Upton scored 30no in a single-wicket contest between himself and S Squire against J and C Howitt in 1822; he also took all four of the Howitt's wickets (they made just 10 and 8) so effectively beat the pair on his own.
